Historical Context
The White Castle placer claim is located near the historic town of Cleator in the Turkey Creek Mining District of central Yavapai County, approximately 65 miles north of Phoenix.
Gold was discovered in the Turkey Creek Mining District during the 1860s, leading to the development of mining camps including Cleator, formerly known as Turkey, as well as nearby Bumble Bee and Crown King. For well over a century, this region has been prospected and mined for both placer and lode gold from its washes, quartz veins, and hard-rock deposits.

Our sampling focused primarily on exposed bedrock within the washes. By vacuuming cracks and crevices in the bedrock, we recovered nice chunky placer gold. Gold found in the area can range from fine gold and chunky flakes to pickers and occasional nuggets. We have also heard reports of larger nuggets having been recovered from the claim in the past, providing additional potential for metal detecting.
The exposed bedrock makes White Castle particularly attractive for vacuuming and detecting. Cracks, fractures, low spots, and other irregularities in the bedrock provide natural traps where placer gold can accumulate.
The property is also well suited for drywashing, providing another method for working the gold-bearing material within the washes.
In addition to its placer potential, White Castle contains a massive quartz vein. The current owner has reported finding quality quartz crystals on the property, providing additional opportunities for rockhounding and exploration of the quartz system.
Terrain and Access
Access to White Castle is straightforward by dirt road. Although portions can be rough and bumpy, most SUVs, pickup trucks, Jeeps, side-by-sides, and similar vehicles should be able to reach the property without difficulty under normal conditions. Passenger vehicles should also generally be able to reach the claim with careful driving.
The property offers excellent parking and ample room for camping directly on the claim, making it convenient for extended prospecting trips.
With two washes, exposed bedrock, gently rolling terrain, and a substantial quartz vein, there are numerous areas of the property to explore.
